Virtual Solutions : Scripts : Password Sentry : Presales : Bandwidth Throttle

A presales question that we hear from time to time is whether Password Sentry (PS) can monitor and throttle per-user bandwidth. In a word, no. This is not a feature we will include into PS. We could, but in our professional opinion, it would not be to the benefit to our clients. As a matter of fact, it could be to their detriment.

Although a few of our competitors use CGI (Perl / PHP) to monitor and throttle bandwidth, this practice is highly unrecommended. Such a solution can greatly increase load on the server, and create more issues that can exacerbate the problem. Many, if not most, web hosts will not allow scripts of this nature on virtual (shared) servers as they can disrupt other clients.

Instead, the preferred solution is to use the Apache mod_throttle module. It's the module that the big guys use! Big buys like hotornot.com. Best of all, the module is FREE! However, unless you have experience with installing Apache modules, you will need to ask your web host to install the module. Most will as the module is well-known and well-respected. It is a quick and easy module to install and configure.

So, if you are located on a shared server or a dedicated server with high bandwidth issues, then the Apache mod_throttle module is the perfect solution for you!
